Declarative Frontiers: Running Kubernetes on RISC-V with NixOS
An open alternative to x86 and ARM shows promise: the RISC-V architecture is transitioning from an academic curiosity to a serious contender for edge and cloud workloads. However, deploying a complex cloud native stack like Kubernetes on RISC-V remains a minefield of fragmented kernel trees, slow native compilation on low-power Single Board Computers (SBCs), and missing upstream package suppor.
We demonstrates why NixOS can be idealfor bootstrapping emerging hardware architectures. We showcase how Nix’s native support for cross-compilation, flakes, and declarative kernel customization allows us to bypass the pain of native RISC-V builds entirely. We will share raw, unvarnished performance data comparing RISC-V Kubernetes nodes to their ARM counterparts, evaluating CPU/memory overhead and network limitations with Nix. Finally, we map out the "rough edges"—including Go runtime quirks and missing nixpkgs dependencies.
